There is a sound that means fall has arrived: the crisp crack of a fresh apple. And there is a flavor that belongs beside it: caramel. Put them together and you have a classic. Deconstruct them into a dipping bar and you have something the entire table will gather around.

This setup is quick to assemble, easy to scale for any group, and built around Harry & David products that do the heavy lifting. No half-eaten apples. No wax-coated sticks. Just good fruit, great sauces, and every topping worth having within reach.

Perfect for: Halloween parties, fall birthday gatherings, family weekends at home, school harvest events, Friendsgiving, or any autumn afternoon that deserves a treat worth lingering over.

What You Will Need

From Harry & David

Toppings and Extras

  • Chopped walnuts or pecans
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Sprinkles
  • Toasted coconut flakes
  • Your favorite candy, crushed
  • Bamboo skewers or wooden sticks for dipping

How to Set It Up

Step 1: Warm the sauces.
Heat the Harry & David caramel sauce in a small saucepan over low heat, or microwave it in 30-second intervals, stirring between each. Melt the Scharffen Berger chocolate bars or chips using the same gentle method. Pour both into small serving bowls or ramekins deep enough for easy dipping. Set them side by side at the center of the bar.

Step 2: Slice the apples.
Core and cut the apples into wedges, about eight slices per apple. A crisp, tart variety (Granny Smith, Fuji, or Honeycrisp) holds up well to thick sauces and gives you a clean bite against the sweetness of the caramel. If you are slicing ahead of time, toss the wedges in a small amount of lemon juice to keep them from browning before your guests arrive.

Step 3: Arrange the toppings.
Set out small bowls for each topping in a row alongside the dipping sauces. Give each bowl its own small spoon so people can sprinkle toppings directly onto their dipped slices without cross-contaminating the bowls.

Step 4: Set out the skewers.
A jar of bamboo skewers or wooden sticks at the center of the bar keeps things neat and makes the dipping easy for kids and adults alike.

Step 5: Let everyone build their own.
Dip in caramel, dip in chocolate, or go back and forth between both. Roll in toppings, layer them on, or go clean and simple. There is no wrong approach. That is the entire point of a dipping bar.

Topping Ideas

Classic:

  • Chopped walnuts or pecans
  • Sprinkles
  • Mini chocolate chips

Elevated:

  • Moose Munch Premium Popcorn (caramel and chocolate mix)
  • Toasted coconut flakes
  • Crushed graham crackers
  • Flaky sea salt

For the kids:

  • Candy-coated chocolates, crushed
  • Rainbow sprinkles
  • Gummy bears (trust it)

A Few Notes Before You Serve

Plan on one large apple per person if this is one of several snacks, or two apples per person if the bar is the main event.

The caramel sauce stays best when it is warm. If the bar runs long, give it a quick stir and 20 seconds in the microwave to bring it back.

The Scharffen Berger chocolate is worth using. A richer chocolate sauce makes the whole setup feel intentional rather than assembled. The difference is noticeable.

Moose Munch as a topping is not optional. Do not skip it.
